KNOW THE ARTISAN
GULAB, KRISHNA, AND SULOCHANA

Gulab, Krishna, and Sulochana, are a mother, daughter, and daughter-in-law trio from Narhet, Rajasthan. They share a very precious bond wherein they chit chat, joke, and have a lot of fun while weaving together. Their rapport is easily reflected in their creations. 22-year-old Sulochana has been weaving for four years, and within that time she has made four Manchahas. Her favorite sweet dish is Kalakand, and she loves watching Chota Saddam on TV. She has always dreamed of traveling, but she hasn't had the chance to see other places quite yet.

This rug represents Sulochana's dream to travel. Playing on a vast abstract base and small motifs, Sulochana weaved in a bird's eye view of a landscape. Using a traditional pattern style, she made two large skeletal leaf-like structures which represent mountain tops. There are also two small planes flying intersecting routes. The waves and blots of mixed colors on the left of the rug are a rock face as she imagines it would look from the sky. Udaan means 'to fly,' and this Manchaha is nothing short of an artist's creative depiction of flight.
